01 — The challenge and context

Launching an independent spirit within a mature and competitive premium market.

To mark the 185th anniversary of Alexander Pushkin’s classic novel, distribution company Simple set out to create its first independent, high-value spirit. The mandate required establishing a brand platform and visual presence that could introduce a new drinking culture—positioning Onegin as a high-end spirit intended for slow, leisurely conversations over ice, similar to how fine whiskey is enjoyed.

To bring this vision to life, Simple partnered with Mildberry to develop the visual identity, custom bottle structure, and label design. The strategic goal was to appeal to an audience of modern intellectuals and tastemakers while balancing Golden Age cultural heritage with contemporary aesthetic standards.

02 — What we did

Translating a literary character into brand strategy, structural design, and packaging.

Mildberry built the brand's core narrative around the enduring concept of the classic 19th-century nobleman—an intellectual and world citizen at the crossroads of cultures.

Establishing a new drinking culture for a premium spiritBrand Strategy & Positioning

We formulated the brand strategy around the concept of "sensible luxury" and deliberate, slow consumption. Positioned as a spirit to be enjoyed over ice during intellectual conversations, the strategy established a distinct market role for Onegin, bridging classic heritage with contemporary lifestyle expectations.

02

Embodying the nobleman's posture in physical formCustom Structural Design

We designed a tall, slender bottle structure directly inspired by the posture and attire of a 19th-century aristocrat. The sleek proportions mirror a fitted black redingote, granting the product an immediate physical elegance and a distinct tall silhouette on retail shelves.

03

Expressing cultural heritage through subtle packaging detailsMultidimensional Visual Identity

We designed a snow-white matte label whose low-contrast details reflect the complex, elusive nature of Pushkin's nobleman. The composition incorporates a frost pattern referencing the novel's winter setting. An arrowless clock face behind the "O" monogram to symbolizes timelessness. These subtle graphics resist superficial reading—slipping away at a glance and requiring closer inspection, mirroring the contradictory depth of the hero himself.

03 — The outcome

A distinctive packaging and identity that established Onegin as a benchmark of sensible luxury.

Mildberry delivered a complete visual and structural design that successfully launched Simple's signature spirit, establishing an authentic brand image that bridges classic noble heritage with a modern, elevated drinking culture.
