01 — The challenge and context

Foreign brands entering China’s dairy market must overcome deep consumer skepticism around product authenticity and origin.

China’s massive, fast-growing dairy market is driven by immense consumer demand for high-quality products, particularly long-shelf-life milk. However, local consumers remain highly cautious about quality and fear being misled by domestic brands mimicking European aesthetics. To establish a market presence ahead of local production, Food Union needed to enter China with a genuinely authentic European brand.

Food Union chose Limbažu Piens, a Baltic brand dating back to 1922. Mildberry had previously developed the brand and packaging design for Limbažu Piens in its home market of Latvia. Recognizing that its complex, hard-to-pronounce Baltic name served as the ultimate reason-to-believe for true European origin, Food Union selected it for Asian expansion. Mildberry was then tasked with adapting the very brand system it had built for Latvia to fit the specific expectations of Chinese consumers.

02 — What we did

Adapting semantic and visual identity touchpoints to resonate with Chinese consumers while preserving original European heritage.

Leveraging cross-border expertise across European and Shanghai teams, Mildberry corrected the positioning and packaging system to align with local market realities.

01

Balancing phonetics and local meaningSemantic Adaptation

Mildberry Shanghai developed a tailored Chinese adaptation of the brand name. We selected a combination of Chinese characters that mirrored the phonetic sound of "Limbažu Piens" while simultaneously communicating positive brand associations around quality, purity, and heritage.

02

Elevating heritage for gift-giving culture Packaging Design & Premiumization

In China, premium long-life milk is frequently purchased as a gift. We refined the packaging design to emphasize the brand’s 1922 European origin, combining a premium aesthetic with clear visual cues of historical authenticity and high product safety standards.

03

Building a bridge for market entryMarket Positioning

We established a positioning framework that leveraged the brand’s Baltic roots to answer local demands for premium, trustworthy dairy, laying the strategic foundation for Food Union’s broader expansion into China.

03 — The outcome

A successful market entry that established immediate trust and launched Food Union’s Chinese expansion.

By turning the brand's uncompromised Baltic heritage into its greatest asset, Limbažu Piens successfully entered China as a premium, authentic European milk brand. Mildberry's adaptation bridged the gap between foreign provenance and local consumer expectations. The project provided Food Union with a strong initial foothold in the Chinese market, proving that authentic European identity—when thoughtfully adapted—can overcome consumer skepticism and establish a foundation for long-term regional growth.
