DINING COMMUNITY IN THE HEART OF TORONTO
In today’s cities, the lines between work, culture, and community are increasingly fluid. As urban life evolves, so too must the spaces that shape it — places must be as adaptable and layered as the people who move through them. Restaurants, in this landscape, have the potential to be more than dining rooms — they can become social anchors, creative hubs, and platforms for meaningful connection.
How it all began
When Convivium partnered with Mildberry, the vision was to create a restaurant rooted in high-quality European cuisine, with thoughtful service and meticulous attention to detail — all set within a unique, character-filled space.
Toronto’s Legacy
The location itself offered a rich foundation to build on. Housed in the historic Tin & Copper Smiths Building, Convivium occupies a site with more than 160 years of history. Once home to generations of artisans and creators, it also saw the printing of the first issue of the Evening Star in 1892 — the paper that would go on to become the Toronto Star.
The name
The name “Convivium” brought its own story. Derived from Latin, it once described a gathering centered around food and shared experience — a time to come together, celebrate, and connect. This idea gave early shape to the kind of atmosphere the restaurant aspired to create.
The brand
But as we worked more closely with the founder, a deeper opportunity emerged. We saw the chance to go beyond the traditional idea of a restaurant and create something more layered — a multifunctional culinary destination where food, creativity, and community naturally intersect.
To bring that vision to life, we helped define the brand strategy and positioning, developed a layered concept that blends elevated cuisine with versatile, collaborative spaces, and translated it into a full visual identity, spatial direction, and digital experience.
Symbols of Gathering
The logo takes inspiration from the coat of arms of Toronto, incorporating its iconic three animals in a modern, creative interpretation. It’s a symbol of heritage and strength, but also one of gathering: people coming together over food, conversation, and shared ideas.
Beauty in Everyday Life
Visually, the brand draws from the Arts and Crafts movement, and particularly from the work of William Morris whose era aligned with the building’s construction. A designer, writer, and reformer, Morris believed in the value of craftsmanship, beauty in everyday life, and the meaningful integration of art and function. His ideals resonated deeply with Convivium’s ethos. We wove floral motifs drawn from his textile designs into the brand language, pairing them with an earthy, understated palette and refined typography to evoke warmth, care, and quiet sophistication.
A Space That Inspires
The result is a brand that not only reflects a space, but helps shape what that space can become. Whether it’s a weekday lunch, a private dinner, or an art-driven salon, Convivium feels grounded, intentional, and magnetic.
Mildberry brought clarity and cohesion to a complex idea — positioning Convivium not just as a restaurant, but as a living, shared space where food, ideas, and community thrive. Its digital presence carries this same energy online, inviting people to explore, engage, and be part of something bigger.
Opened in 2025, Convivium marks a new chapter for the historic Tin & Copper Smith Building — inviting everyone to be part of its story.
